Take a free XJTAG trial using an FTDI JTAG controller
Find shorts, opens and connectivity faults with XJTAG boundary scan
If your board has a compatible FTDI device, you can use its on-board interface to evaluate XJTAG’s test and programming tools.
Instead of relying on physical access to pins or test points, boundary scan uses JTAG devices on the board to check connections, helping you identify manufacturing faults earlier. That means you can:
- Investigate board faults faster during bring-up
- Detect shorts, opens and connection issues on compatible PCBAs
- Test hard-to-access pins and nets, including around fine-pitch devices and BGAs
- Reduce time spent on manual probing and fault isolation
- Program flash memory quickly
Support includes compatible production boards as well as development boards from AMD, Efinix, Lattice, Microchip, NXP and many others.

The XJTAG test suite (version 4.3 and later) includes support for JTAG controllers produced by Future Technology Devices International (FTDIâ„¢).*
These multi-purpose communication chips and cables provide a direct connection between a computer’s USB port and various board signals, with JTAG protocol support offering a simple way to establish a basic connection to the unit under test (UUT).
This gives engineers whose board includes one of these devices access to the full capabilities of XJTAG’s boundary scan and programming systems without requiring additional hardware.
Features
- 1 JTAG chain
- Up to 30 MHz TCK frequencies
- Additional programmable I/O pins (typically 4 or 12 PIO)
- World-class flash programming speeds (with data rates of up to 7Mb/s seen in real world tests with pseudorandom data)
Compatibility
Supported FTDI devices
- FT232H – FT232HL, FT232HQ, C232HM USB MPSSE cables
- FT2232H – FT2232HL, FT2232HQ, FT2232H-56Q
- FT4232H – FT4232HL, FT4232HQ, FT4232H-56Q

What will I receive with this trial?
You will download the XJTAG test suite with full functionality and will be provided with a 30-day license. During this period XJTAG’s support services are fully available for any questions you may have. To get started, fill in the form at the top of the page.
Are there any limitations in the trial version?
The tools provided for evaluation are fully functional, so all features of the products are available for you to try out.
What is a Free Board Setup?
If requested, XJTAG will set up its test system and one development project on your own electronics when you take a 30-day trial (NDAs available).
Can I have the trial only, without the board setup?
Yes.
If I want a board setup with my trial, what do I need to supply?
To set up your board, we will require the following (under Non-Disclosure Agreement):
- Circuit diagrams for the board as a PDF that can be searched.
- Netlist(s). We support over 100 netlist formats (including ODB++, RINF, EDIF, Protel, PADS-PCB and any ASCII netlists)
- Details (including BSDL files) of custom JTAG-enabled parts fitted on the boards (if any).
Ideally, we prefer to get the tests up and running on your board. If you would like us to complete this last stage, we will also need access to a board.
What resources are available to help me evaluate the system?
You will have access to XJTAG’s device test libraries during your evaluation period.
Can I get technical support or help for my trial version?
We are proud of our support and as with all aspects of the tools, during the evaluation, we encourage you to try it. We provide full technical support by email and web meeting, to help with the set up or troubleshoot any issues. For additional help, we recommend searching the XJTAG Blog to find focused answers to specific questions.
What are the system requirements?
- Intel® Core i3, i5, i7 processor or equivalent (any generation).
- Microsoft® Windows® 11.
- 8 GB of RAM.
Please apply the latest Service Pack for your operating system. Service Packs are available from Microsoft Support.
What happens when my trial ends?
Once your evaluation licence has expired, you can continue using your XJTAG system without interruption by purchasing it. Simply contact your XJTAG distributor to make a purchase to have your licence extended, and you can continue using XJTAG without reinstalling the software.
